Noboribetsu Onsen
Oyado Kiyomizuya
登別温泉御やど清水屋
Katsushika Hokusai, Kajikazawa in Kai Province. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, CC0

Kiyomizuya opened in 1942 as a kappo restaurant (割烹料亭, a traditional Japanese restaurant) and now runs as a 29-room ryokan set back from Noboribetsu’s hot-spring street with the river behind it. Rooms are plainly dressed, and the house changes the tatami matting pattern with the season: 8-mat and two-room 16-mat Japanese rooms, plus a 35 sq m Japanese-Western room pairing an 8-mat tatami space with a twin bedroom.

The spring is sulphurous, listed variously as a simple sulphur spring and a sulphur spring, and comes up milky white. A cypress-clad indoor bath and a rock-built open-air bath run free-flowing, with cold water added. With only one open-air bath, men’s and women’s bathing alternates; bathing runs 14:00 to 10:00 and stops 21:00–21:30 for the changeover and cleaning. Nothing can be reserved privately.
Dinner is a thirteen-dish kaiseki (会席) carried to your room in stages so hot food arrives hot; breakfast is a ten-item Japanese set with local wasabi pickle and the house’s own green laver. Extras such as simmered kinki rockfish or Tokachi beef (3,600 yen) are ordered when booking. Where breakfast is served varies by plan: the inn’s own notes disagree, some placing it in the room, others in a dining room from July 2025.
Check-in 14:00 (last 19:00), check-out 10:00. The inn collects guests from Noboribetsu Onsen bus terminal on a phone call, but not from JR Noboribetsu Station. Children of all ages are taken; a child sharing bedding stays free.
Why we chose it
The kitchen came first here: the house opened in 1942 as a kappo restaurant, a traditional Japanese restaurant, and still puts a thirteen-dish kaiseki in your room, carried in stages so hot food arrives hot. That, and the scale of the place — 29 rooms, set back from the hot-spring street with the river behind — is the draw. Be clear-eyed about the bathing: one open-air bath, alternating between men and women, and nothing reservable privately.
