Noboribetsu Onsen lies in southern Hokkaido, in the city of Noboribetsu, and is one of the best known hot spring towns in Japan. Between it and neighbouring Karurusu Onsen ten different kinds of spring water rise, which few resorts anywhere can match; the tourist association points out that being able to bathe in this many at once is unusual. The one most people picture is the sulphur spring, milky white and smelling faintly of boiled eggs. The town sits about 8 km from JR Noboribetsu station, an hour and ten minutes from Sapporo by limited express, or an hour from New Chitose Airport by highway bus.
