A log house in Sengokuhara, let whole to one party. The operator, Resol Stay, says the log timber was shipped from Canada by container and assembled here. The layout is 4LDK with three bedrooms, sleeping ten on six single beds, two sofa beds and two futons in the tatami room; those futons live in the closet and guests lay them out themselves. The booking page gives the grounds as roughly 600 tsubo, about 300 of it garden. There is a billiard table upstairs. Sengokuhara sits at around 700 metres inside the Hakone caldera.
The house runs unstaffed. Entry is by a four-digit code emailed ahead of arrival, and since nobody is on site, bags cannot be dropped before check-in and there is no early check-in or late check-out. Check-in is from 16:00, last entry 23:00, and check-out 10:00, but help with the door stops at 18:00, so first-time guests are asked to arrive by then.
No meals are served. The kitchen has an induction hob with grill, cookware and tableware; seasonings and cooking oil are not provided and guests bring their own. The bathroom belongs to the house alone, with a bathtub and shower.
Pets are refused. Building and grounds are entirely non-smoking, and open flame - fireworks, candles, bonfires - is banned indoors and out. Barbecuing is allowed with equipment you bring, though not with fire on the deck terrace. Children of any age are counted in the headcount.
Why we chose it
One party gets the whole log house and a garden the operator measures at some 300 tsubo, 700 metres up inside the Hakone caldera. It is a self-catering stay in the strict sense: no meals, no staff on site, a door code instead of a front desk, and even the seasonings are yours to bring. The operator is candid that this is a maintained older villa rather than a serviced hotel.
