Plaisir Hakone is a self-catering rental villa (貸別荘) in Sengokuhara, Hakone. Two buildings, A and B, hold four separate houses; each is a two-storey 3LDK with one Japanese-style room and takes up to 20 people. The two houses in building A can have their living rooms joined for parties of up to 40, and the owners say the site holds 80 in all. It is aimed at groups — club and seminar training camps, company trips, several families travelling together — and children are taken: under-fives free, a child rate from five to the end of primary school.
No meals are served; the house states that as a 貸別荘 it does not provide food. Each house has a kitchen free to use, with rice cooker, microwave, gas burners, pots and tableware, and a garden with a gas barbecue grill under a roof or tarp, included year-round. Bring food, seasoning and oil; grill, tongs, tables, chairs and disposable plates are provided. Barbecuing and hand-held fireworks — the only kind allowed — stop at 21:00.
This is not a hot spring property: the bath in each house is a jet bath. Two day-use bathhouses are close, Sengokuhara Shinanoki Ichinoyu a 20-minute walk and Fujihakkei-no-yu five minutes by car.
Check-in is 15:00 at the front desk (last arrival 18:00), check-out 10:00. Sengoku bus stop, 30 minutes from Hakone-Yumoto, is a 10-minute walk; parking is free. Bring towels and toothbrushes; cards are not accepted on site.
Why we chose it
You rent a whole 3LDK house here, with the kitchen, the covered gas barbecue and all the tableware in the rate, and up to four houses can be booked together. It suits a group that would rather cook for itself than be waited on. Go knowing what it is not: no meals, no hot spring, no towels and no card payment on arrival — a hot spring bathhouse is a 20-minute walk away.
