Shogetsu Grand Hotel, founded in 1934, stands above the Toyohira River gorge at Jozankei, and all 50 of its rooms face the valley. They run from 32 sq m twins on the bath floor to a 67 sq m family room for four. Only the Premium Room and the single suite, room 801, at about 100 sq m, have a hot spring bath in the room; the inn states plainly that the King-Bed Room’s view bath is not hot spring water.

The water is a sodium chloride spring (ナトリウム-塩化物泉), free-flowing from the source by the house’s account, with water added because it arrives at about 75°C. Two bathhouses, each with an indoor and an open-air bath, swap between men and women early each morning so guests can use both; bathing runs 13:00–03:00 and 04:00–10:00. A dry sauna sits beside a steam bath, 湯の霧 (spring mist), fed by steam off the 75°C source. Two reservable private baths — 山渓の湯 (mountain-gorge bath), facing the river, and 瞑想の湯 (meditation bath), under a domed roof — run 16:00–23:00 in 50-minute slots, last booking 22:00, reserved ahead or at the front desk.
Dinner is a Japanese kaiseki (和食会席), breakfast a tray-served set with a small buffet, both in the fifth- and sixth-floor dining rooms; the sixth-floor lounge lays out a honey buffet from 16:00.
Check-in is 15:00, check-out 11:00. A chargeable, reservation-only shuttle leaves JR Sapporo Station at 14:00 and the hotel at 10:30. Children are accepted at reduced rates; pets are not.
Why we chose it
Every one of the 50 rooms faces the gorge, and the bathing is the reason to come: two bathhouses swapped so guests use both, an open-air bath in each, a steam bath worked from the 75°C source, a dry sauna, and two private baths bookable in 50-minute slots. The reservation-only shuttle from JR Sapporo Station at 14:00 makes the place reachable without a car, and children are accepted at reduced rates.
