RETONA HAKONE opened in December 2025 beside Lake Ashi, a full renovation of the Odakyu Hakone Lake Hotel, which closed at the end of March 2024. Odakyu Resorts runs it, and dogs share the room, the dining table and the grounds.

There are 15 rooms in 10 types, 60 to 200 sq m. Each has its own hot spring bath, and the hotel is precise about what that means: these are indoor baths, not open-air, and there is no communal bath, no sauna and no day-use bathing. The water comes from the Motohakone source, a calcium-magnesium-sodium sulphate and bicarbonate spring that rises at 55°C and is diluted to bathing temperature, recirculated for warmth but not filtered, and chlorinated. Ground-floor rooms open onto their own turf dog runs; upstairs rooms have an inner balcony or sunroom. The detached Villa Suite is the only room with an in-room meal plan.

Dinner is what the kitchen calls modern kaiseki, Japanese cooking in a contemporary course format using Hakone-foothill vegetables and Kanagawa's Oyama Afuri beef, in a 42-seat dining room with four private and four semi-private rooms, dogs at the table. Breakfast is Japanese or Western.

Outside are a 2,200 sq m turf dog park, a 2,000 sq m wooded walking garden and a 100 sq m indoor run. Rabies and combined vaccination certificates are checked at arrival and dogs must be six months old. Children are accepted, some staff speak English, and the hotel is cashless.

Why we chose it

The dog provision is structural rather than an add-on: turf runs opening straight off ground-floor rooms, a 2,200 sq m park, a grooming room that is free and reservable, and a chef qualified in pet nutrition who cooks for the dog as well as the table. We also value how plainly the hotel states what it does not have, from the communal bath to the shuttle from Hakone-Yumoto, which is what makes the rest of it checkable.
