Kitanokaze Saryou

Kitanokaze Saryou is a ten-room ryokan in Hakone's Sengokuhara onsen area, part of the Noguchi Kanko hotel group. Every room has its own source-fed bath — either an open-air tub or an indoor view bath — available around the clock, filled with sulfate-chloride water piped from Owakudani, which the property describes as soft and slightly cloudy. There is no communal bathhouse; a separate reservable open-air bath and a private bedrock-sauna room are also available by advance booking.

Dinner is kaiseki, its courses brought out one by one, and the ingredients come from Hakone and from Hokkaido. It is eaten in the dining room, where all seating is in private rooms, rather than brought to guests' own rooms, though a room-dining plan is offered separately; breakfast is Japanese-style.

Check-in is from 15:00, check-out by 11:00. The nearest stations are Odawara and Hakone-Yumoto, reached by Hakone Tozan Bus to the Senkyoro-mae stop, one minute's walk away; there is free parking. Children of elementary-school age and under are not accepted.

Why we chose it

Every one of the ten rooms is plumbed with Owakudani's own source-fed water rather than a shared tank, and dinner is eaten in a private dining room rather than a communal hall — a Hakone ryokan built around not sharing space with other guests. There is no large communal bath at all, and the house does not accept children of elementary-school age or under.
