Kinnotake Tonosawa

From $420 (estimate) · Last verified August 2026

Kinnotake Tonosawa stands in forest above the Hayakawa gorge in Hakone, reached on foot across the Tonosawa suspension bridge; from it you can see the 1917 Hayakawa railway bridge, a registered tangible cultural property.

Its 21 rooms, in nine types, each open onto a terrace with a free-flowing open-air bath fed by the inn's own well. Tubs are granite on the first floor, Aomori hiba on the second, hinoki in the fourth-floor Kinnotake Suite. The inn calls its source Konjiki no Yu: an alkaline simple spring, pH 9.5, rising at 50.3C and held near 40C in the tubs. There is no communal bath — the inn says so plainly and points guests to their room bath — and no reservable private bath.

Dinner is seasonal kaiseki in the dining room, seated at 17:30 or 19:30; breakfast is a Japanese or Western set. Teppanyaki restaurant Zen opened on the grounds in 2023, and Bar Bamboo runs 21:00 to midnight. A pool and sauna, added in August 2024, are taken by one party at a time for 60 minutes, booked at the third-floor front desk after arrival; the gym is free and open around the clock.

Check-in 15:00, last arrival 19:00; check-out 11:00. Under-12s are not accepted. The Deyama bus stop is three minutes' walk, seven minutes by bus from Hakone-Yumoto; a shared shuttle run by Hakone Tozan Kanko Bus costs 200 yen each way.

Why we chose it

Everything here rests on the room. With no communal bath and no reservable one, each of the 21 terraces has its own free-flowing tub from the inn's own well, usable from check-in to check-out. That suits anyone who finds a shared bath a constraint. The under-12 rule and the rooms left without televisions — a set is lent free on request — read as one decision rather than three.

What it has

  • Room with private hot spring bath
  • Kaiseki dinner
