Hanamomiji is the annex of Shikanoyu, a long-established inn at Jozankei hot spring. On urara, renovated in 2022, rooms of 60 to 105 sq m each have a hot spring bath running free-flowing, with water added to temper it. On Coconoe, opened in September 2024, the inn says it deliberately left the spring out and fitted a shower booth only.

The water is a sodium chloride spring, 62.3°C and pH 6.4, blended from three sources including Shikanoyu’s own. Fugetsu, on the 12th floor, pairs indoor tubs with an open-air bath; Momijiyu, on the 2nd, has a garden-style open-air bath and swaps between women and men. A fourth-floor corridor leads to the Shikanoyu bathhouse next door, with a sauna and cold plunge. Three private baths — one on the 12th floor that opens out, one Shigaraki ceramic, one hinoki cypress — take 60-minute bookings at 2,200 yen, ahead or on the day, and are free to Coconoe guests.
Dinner is a kaiseki (会席) multi-course menu served in third-floor dining rooms; urara guests take the premier “Hatsune” course at eight semi-private tables. Breakfast is a buffet of about 50 Japanese and Western dishes.
Check-in is 15:00, last arrival 19:00; check-out 10:00. A free shuttle runs from JR Sapporo Station at 15:00 and back at 10:00, by reservation. Its own site says guests with tattoos are not admitted to the baths, while a listing it maintains says only uncovered ones are refused, with cover patches sold at reception.
Why we chose it
Two floors here answer the same question in opposite ways, and the inn is candid about it. On urara, the bath in your room runs free-flowing. On Coconoe, opened in 2024, it says it left the spring out on purpose so that guests would use the three communal baths and the sauna — and gives those guests the reservable private baths for free. That is an unusually clear argument for a room without a bath.
